Thoreau Wine Society is an independent wine service – with experience that dates back some 40 years in drinking, collecting, contemplating and debating the wines of the world, as well as traveling and befriending the people involved in making wine – we have nurtured our own ability to source and sell wines in which we genuinely believe. We work to foster a dedicated and educated clientele, so that our passion about historical, varietal and terroir expression may be passed along to our friends.
We recognize Henry David Thoreau of Concord, Massachusetts as being the greatest American proponent of ‘terroir.’ Thoreau was a member of the transcendental movement – those who believed that nature was the closest tangible expression of the divine.
We look for wines that speak ethereally – guided gently by their winemaker to express the qualities of the soils from which they have come; by which, when found, we feel we have discovered a somewhat clandestine natural beauty. That is why we choose to operate in a subtle fashion – no neon lights, no floor stacks – just an unassuming essay in your email inbox which we hope you will enjoy.
